➤ AI + Manufacturing: KUKA aims to run entire factories with AI

KUKA unveiled a platform at the China International Industry Fair (CIIF) in Shanghai on October 12 that aims to integrate artificial intelligence into the control of entire factories.

KAI, short for KUKA Advanced Intelligence, connects machine data, digital factory models, and AI agents that plan and carry out tasks. The automation supplier aims to close a gap familiar to many digitized manufacturers. Their equipment generates a constant stream of data, but that data does not yet translate into coordinated production decisions.

KAI is an integrated solution spanning factory planning, connections between business software and machine controls, production scheduling, and quality control, industry news site Zhongguo Gongkong Wang reported on October 12, 2026 (in Chinese). Equipment and systems from other manufacturers are also meant to be compatible.

In the proposed workflow, operating data from the factory floor flows to a shared decision-making system. Production plans, settings, and work orders then flow back to the equipment. The results are analyzed again.

AI agents are intended to handle this coordination rather than simply prepare information for a person. The benefits therefore depend heavily on whether a factory’s different systems can actually be connected reliably.

➤ AI + Automotive: Geely’s AI switches into four-wheel drive

Geely has just launched its new “Galaxy Zhanjian 700.” The off-road vehicle is designed to handle some of the decisions drivers face off paved roads.

An AI-powered system recognizes the terrain and automatically switches to the appropriate driving mode. Drivers can also press a button to activate a climbing assistance function that configures the four-wheel-drive system for low-speed driving, technology news site Lei Keji reported on October 10, 2026, in its coverage of the sales launch (in Chinese).

Geely is addressing a specific challenge in off-road driving. Drivers need to assess the terrain and know which setting suits it. Automatic mode selection is intended to help less experienced users navigate difficult terrain. The report provides no independent test results.

On paved roads, separate driver assistance systems handle tasks such as navigation-guided driving on highways and city streets. Geely offers different equipment packages for these functions. The base version does not include the more advanced driver assistance system. AI features are thus part of a product strategy that varies by trim level.

➤ AI + Electronics: Synopsys seeks Chinese AI partners for chip design

Synopsys is exploring partnerships with Chinese AI labs to connect its chip design software with local language models, according to Ravi Subramanian, the U.S. company’s head of product management. Such an offering would help Chinese companies develop chips faster, Chinese technology news site IT Zhijia reported on October 9, 2026, citing Nikkei Asia (in Chinese).

In September, Synopsys announced a partnership with OpenAI to develop GPT-Synopsys, an AI model specializing in chip design. It is intended to combine OpenAI’s language models with Synopsys’ design tools and expertise.

Japanese business publication Nikkei Asia describes an example of how such systems could work. A customer submits a section of code describing a circuit and asks for a version that meets a specific power consumption target. The language model and design software work on the task together.

The approach connects a requirement expressed in everyday language with specialized engineering tools. The manufacturer claims this will shorten development times even for complex designs.

For Synopsys, the search also sets a direction for its business. AI could take over tasks currently performed by conventional chip design software. By integrating AI into its own tools, the company aims to turn it into an additional source of business.

➤ AI + Healthcare: Robots take over hospital instrument transport

At Kunshan First People’s Hospital in Jiangsu province, five AI-powered robots are transporting used surgical instruments from operating areas for reprocessing.

The machines completed a total of 79 transport assignments from late August to late September. This provides initial experience from hospital operations beyond a demonstration, science newspaper Keji Ribao reported on October 12, 2026 (in Chinese).

The hospital uses mobile robots with robotic arms, the R1 Pro from Galaxea AI and the MOS from Lumos Robotics. According to the report, they can pick up items for transport, avoid obstacles, and use elevators independently. The system can be monitored and serviced remotely.

Transport operations maintain separation between clean and contaminated areas. Strict hygiene and infection prevention requirements apply. The robots are intended to take over the transport of contaminated instruments from hospital staff, reducing their direct contact with hazardous material.

A single instrument transport takes no more than an hour. The robot service is expected to expand soon to contaminated wrapping materials and medical waste. The system is then intended to meet the transport needs of 20 operating rooms handling approximately 130 procedures a day.
